sunset

Chipotle - Sunset Valley, Austin TX

In 2001 Chipotle began a series of refinements in the energy efficiencies and green conscious design. Feeding on the restaurant's "Food with Integrity" program, Chipotle started its "Design with Integrity" program. Sunset Valley was the first of these projects. National Engineering was asked to review the current lighting package and develop a new standard that kept with the look and feel of Chipotle but offered better energy conservation. We evaluated several bulb and fixture configurations, including assembling and testing fixtures in our office. We also reevaluated the hood exhaust rates and water heating systems. When the project was completed Austin Energy awarded the store a three-star (out of a possible four-star ranking) energy award. This was the first restaurant to achieve a ranking this high.

8th

Chipotle - 8th & Congress, Austin TX

8th and Congress was to be Chipotle's second green store. The project originally started with the idea for it to be LEED certified. However, as the process moved forward it was determined that LEED wasn't ready for renovations. In addition to items developed at the Sunset Valley store this location also had a scrubber to clean the grease exhaust, not because it had to be there but to be a good neighbor. A grease interceptor that could also guarantee its performance was also installed. Austin Energy awarded this project its four-star award, beating out Sunset Valley and becoming the first restaurant to achieve the award.

mentor

Chipotle - Mentor, OH

When the design of Chipotle's first prototype facility began in 2002 the term "prototype" was offensive to many of the Chipotle design managers. The idea of a building type that was not specifically designed for its site and surrounding was a foreign concept to them. However, facing the reality of a rapidly growing restaurant group they knew they needed a facility that could easily be modified to many sites. National Engineering was part of the team that developed the prototype and has since adapted/modified it to roughly thirty locations.

wadsworth

Chipotle - Wadsworth, Lakewood CO

National Engineering played an instrumental role in the development of Chipotle's second free-standing prototype. This store is 2,500 square-feet and boasts a flat oval exposed duct system in the dining room. Wadsworth was the first of the new prototypes and is located near Chipotle's corporate headquarters to allow future testing of the concept. Since the opening of the store in June 2005 they have already performed one renovation to test a new concept for the point of sale and drink counter.
